Heavy rainfall causes rail damage north of Rockhampton

10/11/2021

A statement from Queensland Rail's Head of Regional Jim Benstead:

"Overnight we experienced heavy rainfall north of Rockhampton, which has caused significant damage to the North Coast rail line, including multiple track washouts.

"As a result, the line is closed between Glen Geddes and Kunwarara, north of Rockhampton, while our crews assess the full scope of the damage and plan for the required repairs.

"Queensland Rail crews and local contractors are mobilising from Mackay and Rockhampton to ensure we can complete the required repairs as quickly and as safely as possible, weather conditions permitting and resume trains through this critical part of our network.

"At this stage, at least nine freight services have been affected and are stabled at safe locations along the line.

"We have also arranged for road coaches to convey our Spirit of Queensland customers north of Rockhampton, subject to the road conditions remaining safe.

"Once we understand the scope of repairs required, we will be able to provide the community with further information regarding recovery timelines.

"We will continue to keep the community updated as more information becomes available.

"Customers booked on a Queensland Rail service in the affected areas are encouraged to visit queenslandrailtravel.com.au or call Queensland Rail Travel on 1800 803 009."
